A Night of True Colors Shining Through at The Phoenix
By Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine Staff
Sometimes the most extraordinary moments happen when no one is expecting them.
On a mellow Sunday evening in early May at The Phoenix Bar & Lounge, one of Las Vegas’ most beloved LGBTQIA+ gathering spaces, patrons were enjoying a typical karaoke night when an international music legend quietly walked through the door. Accompanied by a few friends, Cyndi Lauper arrived simply looking to relax, have fun, and enjoy the company of the community.
What followed was a night that those fortunate enough to be there will never forget.
Lauper spent the evening mingling with guests, sharing laughs, taking photos, and making everyone around her feel like an old friend. Karaoke host and local favorite Sheila Wright helped turn an already memorable evening into something magical.
“She is truly one of the loveliest, most humble, and magical people you’ll ever get to meet,” Wright said. “At the time, Cyndi and her friends were asking us to do a duet, and I joked, ‘Twist my arm!’ Cyndi chose the song ‘I Got You Babe.’ She is everything. More than what you hear!”

The pair brought the house down with their spirited rendition of the Sonny & Cher classic, but the evening’s most unforgettable moment was yet to come.
As the night drew on, Lauper quietly stepped to the microphone and delivered a powerful a cappella performance of her anthem, “True Colors.” The room fell silent.
“There was not a dry eye in the bar,” Wright recalled.

Guests described the experience as emotional and surreal.
“I was sitting at the bar, and the next thing I knew, CYNDI LAUPER walked in! I almost fell off the barstool!” said one patron.
“My gay card exploded in my wallet! I met Cyndi Lauper!” another guest joked.
“I cried! I literally cried when she sang ‘True Colors,’” shared another attendee. “It was definitely what we needed at this crazy time in the world.”
According to friends who accompanied her, Lauper loved the atmosphere at The Phoenix and appreciated the warmth she received from both the staff and patrons. It was exactly the kind of welcoming, authentic community space where she could simply let her hair down and enjoy herself.
For one unforgettable night, a local karaoke gathering became a celebration of music, community, and connection. It was a reminder of why Cyndi Lauper remains such a beloved icon, not just because of her incredible talent, but because of the kindness, humility, and love she continues to share with the world.
From all of us in Southern Nevada’s queer community and throughout the global LGBTQIA+ family, thank you, Cyndi, for sharing your true colors with us.
