Las Vegas has long been a stage where stars are made, but few have carved a career as colorful, resilient, and unforgettable as Jimmy Emerson, the Local Celebrity Grand Marshal of the 2025 Las Vegas PRIDE Night Parade. With decades of work as an actor, comedian, female impersonator, and producer, Emerson’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and the power of laughter.

From Small-Town Texas to the Las Vegas Strip

Born in Sealy, Texas, and raised in Orange, Emerson’s early years were steeped in the conservative culture of small-town life. But even as a boy, he knew his destiny wasn’t in the oil fields or the DuPont refinery where so many locals worked. Instead, he followed a passion for theater, studying at Lamar University before moving to Houston, where he hosted his first drag show at the famed Farmhouse in 1976.

That first gig set off a whirlwind career. Emerson became a touring star in Bottoms Up, a comedy revue show that took him to cities across the U.S. before landing him a coveted role in An Evening at La Cage at the Riviera Hotel. There, he dazzled audiences with comedic impersonations of icons including Roseanne Barr, Cher, Britney Spears, Judge Judy, and Anna Nicole Smith.

La Cage not only cemented his reputation but also took him around the globe: London, Aruba, New York, Atlantic City, and beyond, spreading laughter wherever he went. When the Riviera show closed in 2009, Emerson seamlessly transitioned into Divas with Frank Marino and later expanded his own creative empire through Starr Pro Productions, producing hit revues like UnBOYlievable, Born Divas, and Funny PHAT and Fabulous.

Tammy Spraynette: A Star Is Born

Among his many characters, none is more beloved than Tammy Spraynette, the “ultimate trailer trash hoot” with a love for country queens like Dolly, Loretta, and Tammy. Emerson admits Tammy is his most requested role, and one that has “bought me many homes and cars.”

When asked about his influences, Emerson doesn’t hesitate to cite comedy greats. “Growing up, I loved Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and the sitcoms from the ‘70s. I listened to Rusty Warren, Moms Mabley, Joan Rivers, Belle Barth, and so many others. And I learned a lot from Breck Wall of Bottoms Up fame; he taught me the ‘blood and guts’ of showbiz.”

From those lessons, Emerson stresses one piece of wisdom above all: “ALWAYS be on time! Like Billy Porter says, ‘if you are 15 minutes early, you are still 15 minutes LATE!’”

La Cage

Out of all the glittering moments in his career, Emerson’s proudest memory is deeply personal. He recalls when his grandmother, Mam Maw, came to see him headline La Cage in Las Vegas. “She had no idea that drag was such a big deal in Las Vegas. After the show, she met me with tears in her eyes and told me how proud she was of me.”

And in true Mam Maw fashion, she capped off her Vegas trip by winning $10 on a slot machine before declaring it was time to eat.

Even with decades of success, Emerson admits to a regret: opening his own nightclub in Las Vegas. “I went against everything I had been taught and went into partnership with someone I thought was a friend. Not so much. It was a long, sad story, and one day it will be in my book, if I ever get around to writing it!”

But what he does not regret is clear. “The one thing I DO NOT REGRET is marrying the love of my life, Jim Peterson, ‘Baby Bear.’ We are going on 35 years now, and our love is stronger than ever.”

A Well-Deserved Honor

In 2018, the Las Vegas entertainment community named him “MC of the Year,” recognizing not just his comedic talent but also his command of the stage. Now, as Las Vegas PRIDE honors him as a Local Celebrity Grand Marshal, Emerson adds another milestone to his extraordinary career.

His journey from Texas to the Las Vegas Strip reflects not only his talent but also his resilience in an industry where, as he puts it, “backstabbing is a real art form.” Yet Emerson continues to thrive, producing shows, touring the world, and bringing joy to audiences with his signature humor and heart.

As the PRIDE Parade takes over the streets of Las Vegas, Jimmy Emerson’s place at the front of the celebration is more than well-earned, it’s a testament to a lifetime of artistry, laughter, and authenticity.
